Mackay Sugar Cane

The irrigation audit identified energy savings of 10% with a payback of 3.4 years by modifying the discharge piping on the 45kW pump to reduce pressure losses. Additional savings were identified by replacing pumps and adding a variable speed controlled, but with longer payback periods. Emission savings for the solution have been estimated to be 3.1 t CO2-e.

A recent energy audit showed how improving the current systems can lead to energy and cost savings. The recommendations explored in the audit included the replacement of star-delta starters with new variable speed drives, replacement of diesel winch pump, and installing a 10kW solar system at the bore pump. The farmer has installed the solar pumping system.

This audit considered a number of opportunities to reduce heating energy consumption. The case study highlights total energy savings of 2.5% in covering heated hatchery tanks and heat recovery systems, corresponding to 12% of hatchery energy use, with an average payback or around 3.5 years and annual savings of almost $9,500.

Bowen Mango & Tomato Farm

The audit identified a range of energy saving initiatives in the packing sheds including refrigeration, lighting and the installation of Solar PV to supply some power. Three projects had a payback less than 5 years including the lighting and two Solar PV installations. The estimated annual cost savings from all identified projects is nearly $50,000, with carbon reductions of 57.2 t CO2-e per annum.

The irrigation energy audit assessed the site pumping systems including creek pumping and transfer pumping, recommended adding variable speed drives to the 55kW pumps driving the Centre Pivots, and reducing head pressure. Energy Savings of 19 – 30% were identified with payback periods between 23.9 – 8.4 years and average carbon emission reductions of 7.5 t CO2-e per annum.
