The Queensland Government is seeking feedback on a proposed Code of Conduct for Renewable Energy Developers, covering large-scale wind, solar and battery projects.

For farmers, who are often the most impacted by this type of development, this is an important opportunity to have a say about what good developer behaviour should look like in practice. 

The Code is intended to set clearer expectations for how developers engage with landholders, neighbours and communities during the development, construction and operation of renewable energy projects. 

The draft Code and supporting Industry Guidance cover issues such as genuine engagement, managing project impacts, complaints and community benefits. The Code is intended to complement recent changes to Queensland's planning framework.

What should farmers be looking for?

If you have experience with a renewable energy project or have been approached about one, consider whether the proposed Code would:

• require developers to engage early and genuinely, rather than simply provide information

• give landholders meaningful opportunities to influence project design and minimise impacts on farming operations

• provide clear processes for raising and resolving concerns

• set expectations for contractors working on farms

• properly address land access, biosecurity and agricultural impacts

• provide clear accountability when things go wrong.
